Course Purpose
This 3 day (21 hours) 'hands on' workshop is designed to introduce manual therapists to the myofascial assessment and treatment of the breast and surrounding thoracic structures. Every woman will experience some type of breast pain or discomfort during her life. This might be from breast disease, injury, premenstrual symptoms or surgical procedures such as implants or reductions. 
At the end of this workshop therapists will have the knowledge, skills and attitudes to safely and effectively assess and treat the thorax and breast tissue and recommend appropriate home care modalities to promote breast health. Therapists will be able to:


-       explain the indications and contraindications for performing manual therapy for breast health
-       identify postural influences including fascial lines of tension, muscular imbalance and holding patterns and apply specific manual and hydrotherapy modalities to promote and restore optimum posture,
-       assess the breast and it’s associated structures
-       obtain consent to treatment for performing manual therapy for breast care
-       apply specific manual and hydrotherapy techniques aimed at improving the cardiovascular and lymphatic circulation to the breast tissue
-       practice techniques that will promote functional scarring with reduction of adhesions due to surgical procedures, injuries or postural changes
-       perform techniques for working around implants, and
-       recommend self and homecare remedies for promoting breast health including:
o   Hydrotherapy
o   Self breast massage
o   Stretching, strengthening, proprioceptive and postural re-education exercises
o   Breathing exercises
Various anatomical breast models will be available for practice and study. All participants will be expected to participate in practice sessions. Note that there will be zero tolerance for any behavior that is disrespectful towards participants.

What to bring to this course
·      Wear /bring loose clothes
·      2 sheets /blanket, one large bath towel (for draping the chest)
·      length of cloth for performing a breast wrap ( natural fiber - 6 inches wide, 30 inches long)
·      Ladies – please bring a sports bra – to wear during assessment
·      An anatomy text – Netter
·      Water bottle
·      Additional writing pad and pen/pencil for taking additional class notes
