Purpose
This experiential
workshop is designed to share with health care practitioners proposed
theories and practices of ‘
myofascial unwinding’ as a therapeutic manual modality.
Myofascial unwinding
is a manual modality with Osteopathic foundations. The
physiologic/neurologic processes underpinning myofascial unwinding is not
fully understood. The notions of the mind body connection, state dependant
memory, and space dependant memory seems to be key emerging areas of
inquiry.
A hypothetical model
suggested by Minasny is built around the theories of ideomotor action, fascia
neurobiology and the psychology of consciousness (Minasny, 2009). Barrett Dorko another US physiotherapist
teaches a workshop entitled ‘Simple Contact: Manually Managing People in Pain’, a manual modality founded in
‘unwinding theory and ideomotor action’. While these theories are
still in their infancy, manual therapists continue to use the term ‘unwinding’
without fully grasping the proposed mechanism and theories of this modality.
This workshop will introduce therapists to these energing theories and provide an opportunity to engage in disscussions
and practical applications of myofascial unwinding.
Upon completion of this
course, participants will possess the skills, knowledge, attitudes and
attributes to discuss the various theories of, and employ methods of
‘myofascial unwinding’ into a massage therapy treatment and in their personal
self-care practices.
A general knowledge of
human anatomy and physiology with specific reference to fascial anatomy and
physiology
Participants must:
- be open to new ideas and development in the field
of fascial, myofascial research and mind body medicine
- have a sense of curiosity for self discovery and
self care
- be able to fully participate in practical sessions
(that is must be able to give and receive practical sessions)
- practice skills for incorporating myofascial
unwinding into treatment sessions
- practice professional development skills, i.e.,
good listening and communication skills
