Course Purpose

The clavicle is the most commonly fractured bone in the body. It’s role and function in shoulder function and stability is often over looked by many practitioners including massage therapists, physiotherapists and medical doctors. It is very common for the practicing RMT to work with several clients a day who present with shoulder discomfort. Treatment approaches vary from GH joint mobilization, to Swedish massage to myofascial release.

While all these approaches are beneficial, what is often missed are the ligamentous and myofascial attachments of the clavicle. As well, the clavicle via the claviopectoral fascia merges with the deep bracial fascia and is directly connected to the fascia of the upper extremity.  This workshop brings an increased awareness and focus to the clavicle, it’s role in glenohumeral movement and the myriad structures associated with its normal functional movements. It will also provide extensive guidance and hands on practice for working with the connective tissue structures important for clavicular mobility.

Clavicular immobility is commonly associated with conditions such as frozen shoulder, painful arc syndrome, post clavicular fracture, subacromial bursitis, rotator cuff tendonitis and other shoulder pathologies.

Course Description and course goals
This 17-hour workshop (done over 2.25 days) is designed to introduce manual therapists to assessment and treatment concepts for restoring clavicular mobility

The overarching goal of the workshop is:

·      To restore the functional mobility of the clavicle

Within limits as per scope of practice guidelines, at the end of this workshop practitioners will have the knowledge, skills and attitudes to safely and effectively assess and treat the clavicular and it’s supporting structures, and recommend appropriate self care modalities to promote clavicular health and function. Therapists will be able to:
  •      identify and assess the clavicle for it’s inherent movement abilities
  •      assess, develop a treatment plan and treat ligaments that support clavicular function
  •      assess, develop a treatment plan  and treat the muscles that can restrict clavicular function
  •      assess, develop a treatment plan and treat the fascial and myofascial attachments to the clavicle
  •      select, demonstrate and instruct according to client presentation home care activities that will promote healthy clavicle mobility
